Working with earthenware clay

Students will learn about the different types of clay and their uses, how to create a variety of items including beads, cabochons and pendants using slab and shaping techniques and how to add texture to those items with commercially available stamps, found objects and natural items.

Duration: 4 hours

Workshop cost: $70 ($40 tutor fee + $30 kit fee – includes firing and postage) – payable directly to tutor

Kit includes:

  • All clay required for the class
  • Use of tutors tools
  • Firing of your pieces after the retreat and posting them out to you

Supplies required by participants:

None, but if you have any stamps/texture sheets etc that you’d like to incorporate feel free to bring those along.

Decorating earthenware clay

Students will learn about the different types of glazes and their application. They will decorated the pieces created in the clay play session with a combination of techniques including Japanese transfer application, opaque and semi transparent underglazing and the use of gloss and/or satin finish over glazes.

Please note – this workshop will only be open to those who have created pieces during the previous clay workshops.

  • Use of tutors tools, glazes and Japanese tissue papers
  • Firing of your pieces after the retreat and posting them out to you

Embellished fabric kumihimo

Learn the skills required to make gorgeous kumihimo braids incorporating fabric and ribbon for an organic textural feel. Embellish those braids with wire and beads for a unique piece of jewellery.

Kits will include enough supplies and findings to make up to 3 braids each (depending on speed of attendees you may not complete 3 during the class). You choose whether to make bracelet or necklace length or both!

Workshop cost: $55 ($40 tutor fee + $15 kit fee) -payable directly to tutor

Kit includes:

  • Kumihimo disk
  • Findings – clasps, end caps, jump rings
  • Wire and beads for embellishments
  • Lengths of ribbon, silk, fabric, cord in various colours
  • Glue, cotton and needle for finishing braids
  • Pattern/instructions

Supplies required by student: Pliers and scissors will be provided for use in class but if you have particular favourites of your own then feel free to bring them.
